Seasonality of Respiratory Syncytial Virus - Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (RSV-LRTI) in Children in Developing Countries

چکیده
Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is the leading global cause of death in children between 1 month and 5 years of age [1-4]. Clinical characteristics of RSV infection include upper respiratory infection with rhinorrhea and nasal congestion lasting between 7 and 12 days. Re-infection rates vary between 6% and 83% each year, showing that initial infection does not confer immunity to succeeding infection [5]. By the age of 2 years, nearly all children have had RSV infection [6]. More serious disease involving the lower respiratory tract may develop in older children especially in immunocompromised and cardiopulmonary disease patients [7,8]. RSV season varies over time and from location to location [9,10]. The start and end of RSV season can vary year to year, state to state, and can even vary within communities in the same region [9,11].

RESPIRATORY INFECTION Seasonality of long term wheezing following respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract infection
Background: It is well known that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is associated with subsequent wheezing episodes, but the precise natural course of wheezing following RSV LRTI is not known. This study aimed to determine the continuous development of wheezing following RSV LRTI in children up to the age of 3 years. Methods: A prospective cohort study w...

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains one of the great threats to child health associated with considerable acute and long-term morbidity.1 RSV is the main cause of viral lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children in both developed and developing countries, and worldwide almost 34 million new cases occur every year. In the United States, RSV is the most common cause of hospi...

متن کاملRespiratory Syncytial Virus and Other Viral Infections among Children under Two Years Old in Southern Vietnam 2009-2010: Clinical Characteristics and Disease Severity
BACKGROUND Despite a high burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among children, data on demographic and clinical characteristics of RSV are scarce in low and middle income countries. This study aims to describe the viral etiologies, the demographic, epidemiological, and clinical characteristics of children under two years of age who were hospitalized with a lower respiratory tr...
متن کاملSevere Lower Respiratory Tract Infection in Early Infancy and Pneumonia Hospitalizations among Children, Kenya
Severe lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in infants caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been associated with later pneumonia hospitalization among children. To determine risk for pneumonia after RSV hospitalization in infancy, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 2,813 infants admitted to a hospital in Kenya and identified readmissions for pneumonia among this grou...
